A day’s worth of text messages to Drea went unanswered. The next morning, Kasey only sent one text message, first thing in the morning. It would be the only message she sent, she decided. She wasn’t going to chase Drea if the woman wanted to give her the silent treatment. With two kids, a full-time job, and a campaign to win a school board seat, Kasey had more than enough going on. If Drea wanted to pout, she was more than welcome to do so.

The longer Kasey thought about it, the more annoyed she got. They hadn’t ever said they were seeing each other exclusively. They hadn’t had that kind of conversation at all.

The bitter irony of the whole thing was that Kasey ended up having coffee with Mick, the man she’d been chatting with online, and found him to be so full of himself that she practically sprinted out of the Starbucks where they met at her first opportunity.

If she was perfectly honest with herself, she didn’t want to see anyone but Drea. But she felt like she needed to leave that door open for herself. At least for now.

She hadn’t expected Drea to blow up the way that she had. Drea had always seemed so level-headed. So even-tempered. It was one of the things that Kasey liked about her.

Drama. It was the one thing she didn’t miss about dating women.

These were the thoughts going through Kasey’s head as she went through the motions of getting ready for her day — getting dressed, curling her hair, putting on her makeup.

She sat down to a bowl of oatmeal and fruit at the kitchen table a few minutes after that, scrolling through the day’s news and looking for an article she could have her students reflect on in their journals.

Her phone chimed.
